SPECIAL ENROLLMENT

Missed Open Enrollment? Here Are Your Options

Open Enrollment isn't the only way in. Certain life events open a Special Enrollment Period — and some coverage is available year-round.

Life events that reopen the door

A qualifying life event triggers a Special Enrollment Period, and you generally have 60 days from the event to enroll. Common ones include:

Losing other coverage — leaving a job, being laid off, having your hours cut, aging off a parent's plan at 26, or losing Medicaid eligibility.
Household changes — marriage, divorce, having or adopting a child.
Moving — a permanent move to a new ZIP code or county with different plan options.
Income changes that affect your eligibility for help paying for coverage.

The 60-day clock is strict, and it usually runs from the date of the event rather than the date you got around to dealing with it. If something has changed recently, call sooner rather than later.

If you don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

You still have options, though they work differently from Marketplace plans:

Medicaid and CHIP enroll year-round. We don't handle Medicaid enrollment ourselves, but there is no closed window for it — so if your income has dropped, it is worth applying through the state directly rather than assuming you are stuck without options.

Dental, vision, accident, hospital indemnity, and critical illness plans are generally available any time of year. They don't replace major medical coverage, but they can defray specific costs while you wait.

Short-term and limited-benefit products exist, but they are not ACA-compliant, can exclude pre-existing conditions, and vary a lot in what they actually pay. We'll be straight with you about the trade-offs rather than steering you into one.

A note specific to Florida

Florida has not expanded Medicaid, which creates what's often called the coverage gap: some adults earn too much to qualify for Florida Medicaid but too little to qualify for Marketplace subsidies. We don't work with Medicaid, but we will tell you straight if that is where you land rather than selling you something that doesn't fit.

Circumstances change eligibility more often than people expect. A change in hours, household size, or projected income can move you across a threshold mid-year.

Not sure whether you qualify?

Tell us what changed and when. We'll tell you honestly whether a Special Enrollment Period is open to you, and what else is available if it isn't.
