SNOWBIRDS & PART-YEAR RESIDENTS

Health Insurance for Florida Snowbirds

Splitting the year between Florida and somewhere north creates a specific coverage problem: most plans are built around one service area.

The core problem: plans are local

Marketplace plans are sold by county, and their networks are built around that county. A plan bought in Lee County has a Lee County network. It does not follow you to Michigan in June.

HMO plans — the most common on the Marketplace — generally cover emergencies anywhere but little else outside their service area. Routine visits, specialists, and follow-up care up north may not be covered at all.

PPO plans typically include out-of-network benefits, which makes them far more workable if you genuinely split your year. They usually cost more, and they are not available in every county.

Where do you actually live?

Marketplace eligibility is based on where you reside, not where you own property. You enroll through the marketplace for your primary residence, and you are expected to update it if that changes.

This trips people up: if you spend more of the year in Ohio but keep a Florida condo, your Florida address may not be the right basis for enrollment. Getting this wrong can cause coverage and subsidy problems later, including having to repay tax credits.

If you are genuinely changing your primary residence, that move is typically a qualifying life event — which is the clean way to switch, rather than quietly keeping a plan in a state you no longer live in.

What usually works better

A PPO with real out-of-network benefits, if one is available and priced sensibly in your county.

Supplemental coverage — accident, hospital indemnity, or critical illness plans pay cash benefits regardless of network, which can cushion costs when you are away from your plan's service area.

Standalone dental and vision plans often have broader national networks than major medical, so routine care up north may be easier to arrange.

There is no single right answer here. It depends on which months you are where, what care you actually use, and which plans your county offers. That is the conversation to have.
